Potential Still Not Unlocked for the... ...

Of late the Wii has gone mostly forgotten on the software end of things here in SW. With all the crazy blockbusters finally hitting the PS3/360 shelves, it's been tough for games on the Wii to stay afloat in the minds of our esteemed SW posters. However, out on the horizon, there are big possibilities with the Wii that nobody has yet tapped.

See this link.

It is a tech demo, and it has two parts (short vid, I promise). The first part didn't impress me, I've seen it before. It was the second part of the demo that really made me wonder what was possible. I'm not going to tell you much more than that, otherwise you'll never watch it and just assume :P

EA is running with this by the middle of next year. Thoughts?Potential Still Not Unlocked for the... ...
The hidden power of teh Wii!!! :oYou're right. Second part is really cool. I could get back to playing with my Wii. Oh, and first! Potential Still Not Unlocked for the... ...

INORITE? Never heard that before :P
wow!!! and i haven't even seen the vid yet!!!
I saw this a while back...back when I was still cautiously optimistic about the Wii's future. At this point, it would take more companies embracing this technology and using it in great games tailored for the hardcore gamer market (I don't want to see Wii HeadTracking, Nintendo)before I get excited about it. Hearing that EA is going to be including a variant of it in a game to be released next year doesn't fill me with much hope because at the end of the day, we don't know if they're going to be using it in a hardcore title or that rip off of Wii Fit they've been planning.
Probably because Nintendo's vision of the Wii was so convoluted when they designed it, nobody sees what the benefit of it is and just slap some waggle on their games and call it done.
People have been doing this for awhile now.

The demo's head tracking was too gimmicky and at most, a novel idea. Nothing revolutionary.

What is gimicky about it? :? You feel there is no possible way to tie it into a game mechanic that could be interesting, or dare I say, exciting?

Doing what? I see no games where this is utilized.
It's neat, but unless someone comes up with some sort of way to use it in a decent game there's not much point to it. Also I'm not sure how this guy accounts for the fact that the Wii Remote doesn't know exactly where it's pointing at the screen, or whether he accounts for that at all.

Look at me being all cynical and whatnot...I must be getting old. :P

Explain how there is anything revolutionary about this head-tracking demo please.
Johnny Lee works for Microsoft now, in the Applied Sciences division.Anyway, that demo is years old (he posted a YouTube video of it immediately after the Wii launched.) It's a neat tech demo, but it would be extremely difficult integrate it into a game in a cohesive way (unless we're talking about a game on rails, like HotD type game,) The idea was supposed to be incorporated into some games already, but was scrapped entirely (Like Boom Blox for example.)http://www.nintendowiifanboy.com/2008/04/15/nms08-head-tracking-disappears-from-eas-boom-blox/

You point me at where I said it was revolutionary ;)

That's too bad.
Remember there was a topic containing the second part of that video (head tracker) a few months ago.Didnt see the first part before though.
What first comes to my mind when thinking about a head tracking device for playing VG is driving and flying games where you need only turn your head and the camera pans with you and also a game like Too Human where the right stick is used in place of buttons and having the ability to just turn your head would pan the camera around to where you are trying to look.As far as games for Wii, maybe that could work, I dunno - Interesting though. :)

So what are the big possibilities and how does it look exciting?
The fact that they have to release an add on for the Wiimote to give it all the sensitivity and functionality it should have had when it launched says to me the Wii is no way near it's true potential, and it is gimped by last generation hardware as it is. It's a glorified Xbox with waggle controls right now essentially.Until someone actually implements anything beyond what is essentially a mouse like feature with the Wii, it's nothing new or different. I honestly doubt you'd have a problem playing 80+% of the games on the Wii with a Gamecube controller.
Yes, Boom Blox I think used this in some form.
